This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.
Torrero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”

I’ve reblogged this at least two other times but this is possibly one of my favorite photos ever.

The bull is just like ‘hey r u ok?’ it’s so powerful

I’m going to cry :c

This is a practice that needs to end.

Given tumblr’s love for taking pictures out of context, I decided to do some Googling and found some things.
Turns out this picture is fake, and the meaning behind the actions of the matador are completely different than what the text suggests.
Alvaro Munera is a former matador [and he is against this practice, indeed], but he is not the one in the picture, because he is paraplegic due to goring from a bull during a corrida.  This is an excerpt from an article I read.

"In 1984 a bull called ‘Terciopelo’, from the breed of Marqués de Villagodio, caught him in the foot and tossed him across the ring, fracturing the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck – along with other injuries – which rendered him permanently paraplegic.
It was only later after he had been transferred from hospital in Spain to a recuperative facility in Miami to be closer to his relatives in Colombia that he developed a ‘moral’ problem with bullfighting. According to his own account, it was the doctors, nurses, other patients and their families treating him with contempt because of his bullfighting past which caused the change. In his own words, he converted to their point of view because “there are more of them, they must be right.” “

The one in the picture is Sánchez Vara, and he’s performing a “desplante”, which an act before he ends the encounter. He is not displaying remorse or guilt, but the exact opposite. It’s all an act.
“Desplante: A kind of adorno, usually vulgar, in which the torero indicates his total domination of the toro by taking up a dangerous-appearing position in front of the animal’s horns. Usually the desplante is a trick, for the torero will occupy the area in which the animal is blind, and often the animal is winded as well. But the desplante in which the torero touches the horn is genuine and not a trick.”

The text belongs to Antonio Gala, and he wrote it in 1995 for a newspaper. Someone took the chance to include the text to the picture and that’s how this whole thing went viral.
So, as much as I am against this practice, it’d be better if people spread awareness with accurate sources.
